GUIDES / SHOPIFY APP BILLING

How Shopify app billing works

Why you can still be charged after uninstalling an app, how proration works, and who actually gives refunds. Every point links to Shopify's Help Center.

How app charges show up

  1. 01Apps can bill you four ways: recurring subscription charges, usage charges, one-time purchases, and application credits (for example after a mid-cycle downgrade).↗ help.shopify.com
  2. 02Subscription and usage charges appear on your regular Shopify bill. One-time purchases are invoiced separately.↗ help.shopify.com
  3. 03Some apps charge you directly, outside Shopify. Those charges never appear on your Shopify bill.↗ help.shopify.com
  4. 04To see what's coming, go to Settings > Billing > View current charges. Paid charges are under Past bills.↗ help.shopify.com

Billing cycles

  1. 01Each app runs on its own 30-day billing cycle, and its charges are collected along with your Shopify bill.↗ help.shopify.com
  2. 02Usage charges from one app cycle can be split across two Shopify bills, because the two cycles don't line up.↗ help.shopify.com
  3. 03Upgrading an app plan is prorated. Shopify's example: moving from $5 to $15 on day 15 of 30 costs $5 + ($15 − $5) × 15/30 = $10.↗ help.shopify.com
  4. 04Downgrading gives you an application credit for the difference, which you can use on future app charges.↗ help.shopify.com

Uninstalling an app

  1. 01Uninstalling stops future billing cycles, but a pending charge that's already been generated still appears on your next invoice.↗ help.shopify.com
  2. 02If you uninstall a few days after installing, you may still be charged because of where the billing cycle falls.↗ help.shopify.com
  3. 03Canceling inside the app or on the developer's website doesn't uninstall it. To stop Shopify billing, uninstall from Settings > Apps.↗ help.shopify.com
  4. 04Uninstalling doesn't cancel external charges. Cancel those with the developer.↗ help.shopify.com
  5. 05Some apps leave code in your theme after you uninstall, and some data can't be recovered, so export what you need first.↗ help.shopify.com

Refunds

  1. 01Refunds for third-party app charges are decided by the app developer, not Shopify, even when the charge is on your Shopify bill.↗ help.shopify.com
  2. 02To ask: Settings > Apps > the app > Get support. Include the uninstall date, the charge amount and date, and your reason.↗ help.shopify.com
  3. 03Shopify checks in after 3 days. If the developer hasn't helped, Shopify contacts them for you. Refunds still aren't guaranteed.↗ help.shopify.com
  4. 04If the invoice isn't paid yet, ask the developer for a credit so the charge comes off your bill. After it's paid, ask for a refund.↗ help.shopify.com

Tracked apps that may bill outside Shopify

These listings say charges may be billed separately from your Shopify invoice, so uninstalling alone may not stop them. Checked Oct 19, 2026.
